Uganda & Gorilla Trekking -
A Travel Diary

There are some travel experiences where you know, before you even get there, that you're about to do something pretty special.

For me, gorilla trekking in Uganda was definitely one of those.

I travelled to Uganda with Intrepid Travel, and the whole experience was an incredible mix of adventure, wildlife, beautiful scenery and those slightly surreal moments where you stop and think, “I'm actually here.”

But let's be honest — the gorillas were the main event.

Trekking into the jungle

Gorilla trekking isn't quite the leisurely wildlife encounter you might imagine.

There is no safari vehicle driving you up to a viewing platform and no guarantee that the animals will conveniently appear exactly where you're standing.

You trek.

And you trek through the forest looking for them.

The landscape is beautiful, but it can also be challenging. You're walking through dense vegetation, climbing and descending, navigating uneven ground and generally wondering how far away the gorillas could possibly be.

And then your guides give you that look.

They're close.

Suddenly, everyone becomes very quiet.

And then you see them...

Nothing really prepares you for the first time you see a mountain gorilla in the wild.

One minute you're walking through the forest, and the next there is this enormous, incredibly powerful animal sitting there completely unfazed by your presence.

And then you realise there are more.

A family group begins to emerge around you — adults, youngsters and those incredibly curious little ones.

I remember just standing there watching them and thinking how incredibly lucky I was to be experiencing this.

They're surprisingly expressive animals, and watching their interactions is fascinating. The youngsters are playful, the adults are much more relaxed, and every now and then you get one that seems completely uninterested in the tourists standing nearby.

Which, frankly, is probably exactly how it should be.

Being that close

The incredible thing about gorilla trekking is the sense that you aren't simply seeing wildlife.

You're temporarily entering their world.

There's no glass between you and them. No zoo enclosure. No vehicle.

You're standing in the forest with a family of mountain gorillas going about their everyday lives.

And while you're very aware that you're a visitor in their environment, there's something incredibly peaceful about watching them simply do what gorillas do.

Eat.

Rest.

Play.

Climb.

Look at you as if you're the slightly strange one.

The trek is part of the experience

One of the things I loved about the experience was that the trek itself became part of the adventure.

You don't know exactly where the gorillas will be, so there's an element of anticipation throughout the walk.

Every turn in the trail makes you wonder whether the next one will be the moment you find them.

And when you finally do, all that walking suddenly feels completely worthwhile.

It's one of those experiences where you don't really care how muddy your shoes are afterwards.

Uganda beyond the gorillas

While the gorillas were obviously the highlight for me, Uganda itself made a huge impression.

There is something incredibly special about travelling through a place where the landscapes change so dramatically and where wildlife isn't simply something you tick off a list.

The trip felt like a genuine adventure rather than a traditional holiday.

And travelling with Intrepid Travel suited that perfectly.

There was a real sense of getting out there and experiencing the destination rather than simply passing through it.

One of those travel memories

I've travelled to some pretty incredible places over the years, but there are certain experiences that stay with you long after you've unpacked your suitcase.

Uganda and the gorillas are definitely one of them.

There's something very humbling about standing in a rainforest, surrounded by these incredible animals, and realising that you're experiencing something that very few people ever get to see first-hand.

It was muddy.

It was tiring.

It was completely unforgettable.

And if you're looking for a travel experience that's a little more adventurous than simply lying beside a pool for a week, gorilla trekking in Uganda should definitely be on your list.
